Spain, it fails to meet this test, we
oppose it.
This approach rests on the be–
lief that the Western democratic
powers are today the only major
force capable of curbing the ag–
gressions of Stalinism, and that as
against this new system of totali–
tarianism based on a slave .econ–
omy, democratic capitalism repre–
sents at the present historic mo–
ment a higher form of political,
economic, and cultural organiza–
tion. The truth is that the coun–
tries of democratic capitalism are
now the only places in the world
where we can speak of civil liber–
ties, intellectual freedom, and the
possibilities of human advance.
