Mailing Lists

Mailing Lists are a convenient way of sending emails to many people at MET and Boston University. At MET, we have several options:

  • MET IT Distribution List – Best for multi-departmental, affiliation based, or location based communications.
  • Microsoft Outlook Contact List – Best for small and specific communication.
  • Microsoft Teams Group Email – Best for departmental communication.

In addition, BU IS&T offers two services designed for mass email beyond MET College:

Support Policy

MET IT is responsible for the following:

  • Providing instructions or guidance on using Microsoft Outlook Contacts or Microsoft Teams Group Email
  • Creating and modifying MET IT Distribution lists

Support for the Broadcast Email and Majordomo Mailing List systems should be directed to BU IS&T.

Requesting a MET IT Distribution List

Those who wish to create a MET IT Distribution List should contact us with the following information:

  • The suggested name of the email list
  • The purpose of the email list
  • The name(s)/email(s) for those who own the list
  • An Excel spreadsheet containing all membership emails

MET IT will notify when the list is created or if additional information is required.

Troubleshooting

People on the MET IT Distribution List aren’t receiving my emails

This issue may be caused by:

  1. Using an outdated Distribution List

MET IT made changes to our Distribution List system in 2023. Many old Distribution Lists have been replaced and can be found on our Directory page.

If your MS Outlook auto-completes to the old name, you may fix this by following the steps under “Clear the AutoComplete list” section of this knowledge article.

  2. Not sending emails from a BU email address or through MS Outlook

The new Distribution List system verifies the sender is a BU affiliate before sending. Make sure to send your message from your BU email via MS Outlook.

I’m on a Distribution List; I don’t get a copy when I send to this Distribution List

This is a feature of the new Distribution List system to ensure senders don’t receive redundant messages.

If you wish to receive a copy, add your email address to the CC line of your email.
