Handwriting Capture

Live handwriting can convey some principles much more effectively than even the most carefully prepared PowerPoint presentation. It is important that we retain this mode of teaching in the virtual classroom. Handwriting solutions range from electronic capture of the traditional physical whiteboard, to wall-mounted smart boards, to desktop tablets and laptops. These solutions allow handwriting to be captured clearly in a variety of recording formats, and saved as a PDF for distribution to students.

Technologies in Use

Smart, Wacom, eBeam, Surface, USB Document Camera

Use Cases

Traditional Paper and Pen

The simplest way to incorporate handwriting into recordings and conference sessions is the traditional document camera. These are available in USB versions that plug directly into your personal computer and function as a webcam.

Classroom Whiteboard

Electronic whiteboard capture allows an instructor to use the familiar classroom whiteboard, while providing the ability to save a multi page electronic copy of all the boards, and to capture clear, electronic images for conferencing or recording.

Prepared Content/Live Markup

Preparing some content before the presentation and then commenting by hand is both an effective teaching tool and an efficient way to add content to a course.

Wall-mounted Tablet

A wall-mounted tablet allows instructors’ gestures to be captured on camera along with their handwriting.
