Fostering Financial Literacy with Ben Brosnahan – Habitual Personal Finance Workshop

Managing personal finances as a college student can seem daunting. Many students are not taught financial literacy in school and find themselves having to navigate finances on their own. However, one student at Boston University is innovating new ways to overcome these challenges and empowering others to do the same.

Ben Brosnahan, a BU student and aspiring entrepreneur, organized a workshop on personal finance education as part of his involvement with Project Action, a program dedicated to launching a community project with funding and coaching tailored to your goals.

“I wanted to use my passion for personal finance education and entrepreneurship to make a positive impact,” Ben shared. “The workshop was a way for me to educate others and also identify potential solutions for common financial struggles among college students.”

Over 50 students attended the workshop, which included interactive worksheets and resource sheets. The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive—they appreciated the opportunity to engage with facilitators and have open discussions about personal finance.

Ben also credits this success to the support he received from Project Action and Innovate@BU. Meeting with the Project Action panel multiple times helped him refine his event and incorporate valuable feedback. Collaborating with other members of the Innovate@BU team also allowed him to gather more facilitators for the workshop.

Looking ahead, Ben has short-term goals of hosting another workshop and creating a budgeting app specifically tailored for college students. “My ultimate goal is to make personal finance education more accessible and engaging for college students,” he shared.

Ben also encourages other aspiring entrepreneurs to seek support from organizations like Project Action and Innovate@BU. “Having an outside perspective and collaboration opportunities can really elevate your ideas and projects,” he stated.
