As part of International Education Week celebration, the BU Libraries, in collaboration with African Languages Program and Students of East African Ancestry (SEAA), is hosting a CineMAfriq@BU film discussion about Kenyan film Atieno.
Watch the film at your convenience and join us for an informal and fun film discussion.
Directed by June Ndinya, With Caroline Anyango, Produced by Mary Mwende, Atieno is a collaborative fiction film scripted, acted and directed by DreamGirls, a group of adolescent girls and young women from Nairobi and Kisumu. The film tells of Atieno, a 16-year-old girl from a sleepy fishing village, who, due to family circumstances, is force to go to work in Nairobi and send money home.
The film is used by the organization Community Media Trust as an educational outreach tool to facilitate discussions about HIV, transactional sex and entrepreneurship. With the help of a facilitation guide, the audience is asked to discuss the film’s open-ended finale and to imagine how the characters will develop.

Now in its second year, the Celebration has grown into a vibrant campus-wide collaboration that features and honors the linguistic and cultural diversity of our students and the many ways they express themselves through writing, art, and performance. This year, our mission is to recognize multilingualism as a source of creativity, knowledge, and belonging, and to amplify the voices of students who use language, art, and music to bridge cultures, disciplines, and communities.
The Celebration is open to all members of the BU community to showcase the multilingual voices in our classrooms and beyond. The day will feature:
• Student posters, zines, and digital projects
• Multilingual readings and performances
• Interactive activities and language-based games
• A community “clothesline” display of writing
• Music, crafts, and refreshments
We welcome individual students, class projects, and student groups to take part. We encourage everyone to stop by the HTC on Nov. 13 to view the writing and art.
