I
am a graduate student in the Physics Department of
Boston University working in the field of biophysics. Throughout the school year
of 2008-2009, I
worked with Elizabeth Hansel at Boston Latin
Academy and her four 10th grade physics
classes and one 8th grade unified science class,
developing lessons and other
resources. My specific goals while at BLA included
enhancing everyday teaching by introducing new technological
resources into the classroom, and differentiating teaching
by giving personal attention to students either in need of
extra help or looking for more advanced challenges. I
also sought to offer new and exciting learning opportunities
to our students through resources at both BU and Harvard
University. |
Boston
Latin Academy is a Boston public school located in
Dorchester, South Boston. The school is an exam school
and requires admission exams from its students. As a
result, BLA attracts students from all around Boston, and
its students are generally motivated learners who fare well
on both their final school and state exams. BLA
teachers are both skilled and motivated, but as a public
school, BLA faces many of the same challenges other public
school do, including limited funding and teaching
resources. This creates a natural role for an NSF
GK-12 fellow not only as an extra classroom teacher, but as
a source of new resources and opportunities for the
students.

I
welcome the use of these materials
and ideas for those interested in including them in their
own lessons. Please contact me if you have any
questions or feedback about the material or my teaching
experiences as a GK-12 fellow.
