Assistant Data Specialist
Global Oncology, Inc. (GO) is a non-profit started by two Harvard-trained physicians, whose objective is to achieve more equitable cancer care by creating and fueling active and dynamic partnerships between skilled professionals.
GO currently seeks a self-motivated, detail-oriented individual to assist the team with cleaning data for the Global cancer Project Map (GCPM) project. The data has been collected as an international effort to provide easy-to-access resources for public health workers and researchers. It is an attempt to foster collaboration between various organizations to deliver cancer care more effectively in resource poor settings.
This paid five-week internship, approximately 10-15 hours per week, will grant the successful candidate the opportunity to connect with well-established professionals and researchers working in the field of data science, medicine, and public health.

PAID Practicum or Part-Time Position
Coordinator, BUSPH “Spotlight” Series
The Practice Office of the Boston University School of Public Health is continuing its “Spotlight” series, a school-wide effort to focus attention on an issue of public health importance. The Spotlight initiative is implemented over a two-year cycle, with a different public health topic introduced in each new cycle. The first Spotlight series, beginning in Fall 2012, focused on the many public health issues related to obesity. “Spotlight on Obesity” identified several academic, research, and community engagement activities aimed at addressing this topic and highlighted the interactivity among the eight public health disciplines taught at the school. The second Spotlight series, Spotlight on Mental Health, began its two-year cycle in Fall 2014.
Position description
The Spotlight Coordinator is involved in the planning and implementation of this project, and reports to the Assistant Dean for Public Health Practice. The position is housed in the BUSPH Practice Office. Job duties focus on program development, communications, coordination, and logistics.
Scope of work
- Program development/implementation:
A group of subject matter experts has been identified and is convened periodically. Based on input from this group, the Spotlight Coordinator is involved in identifying specific mental health topics from the perspective of public health and developing a schedule of activities to be conducted involving students, staff, faculty, and practice partners. The Spotlight Coordinator takes a lead role in conducting the events and activities, with input and direction from Practice Office staff.
- Communications:
The Spotlight Coordinator writes and designs promotional materials, helps to update the Spotlight web page, and promotes the campaign through social media. He/she works closely with staff from the BUSPH Practice Office and Communications Office to ensure that the communication plan is consonant with the School’s communications policies, procedures, and strategy. - Project Coordination:
The Spotlight Coordinator supports the project in coordinating campaign activities with key stakeholders, including subject-matter experts (at BUSPH and beyond), academic and administrative departments, nonprofit organizations, and other partners. The Spotlight Coordinator is the lead organizer of the Student Spotlight Group, and helps ensure that students develop and promote at least one activity per semester.
Qualifications
The candidate must be a Boston University student enrolled at the BU School of Public Health. The candidate must be a self-starter with excellent writing, research, and communications skills. Demonstrated experience with program management, communications, social media, and website development greatly desired. The ideal candidate will also possess a keen interest, knowledge, and passion for the topic of mental health.

The BU Center for Global Health and Development (CGHD), School of Public Health (SPH), and the College of Communication (COM) have an ongoing partnership with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting (http://pulitzercenter.org/). The goal of this collaboration is to exchange knowledge and resources on global health and crisis reporting with the ultimate objective of providing BU students in SPH and COM with the opportunity to hone their global health and crisis reporting skills under close mentorship from Pulitzer Center journalists. During this 6-8 week practicum, outstanding BU students will have the opportunity to work in Washington, D.C., at the Pulitzer Center headquarters and to travel internationally (likely to a developing country) on a 2-3 week reporting trip mentored by professional journalists.
Goal: There is a symbiotic relationship between journalists and health workers. In crises, health workers need journalists to communicate accurate news to the appropriate audiences and journalists need health workers to provide them with news and opportunity to learn about the issues of concern. By building a stronger collaboration between the two professions, we hope to provide more accurate reporting, and increase awareness about global health topics.
Deliverables: Students selected for this internship will be expected to work with Pulitzer Center headquarters staff for 2-4 weeks in Washington DC, and travel to the field mentored by Pulitzer Center journalists to research and write a narrative feature article or create a multimedia production, and maintain a global health reporting blog. Timing: The BU-Pulitzer Center Internship will take place between May and August 2015.
Funding Available: One student from COM and one from SPH will be selected for the 2015 program. Approximately $5,000 will be available per student to be used toward each intern’s international reporting trip to cover transportation, lodging and related hard costs, and toward living expenses in Washington, D.C.
Qualifications: Applicants must have some documented experience in both public health and journalism. This experience can be demonstrated through course work and instructor recommendations. Preference will be given to students who meet these criteria:
COM Student Eligibility:
- Graduate and upper-class undergraduate students from the Departments of Journalism, Documentary Film, and Public Relations
- Enrolled in or already completed PH510 or PH511 on the Charles River Campus or a class at SPH Or demonstrated interest in/and or experience in global health or allied fields
SPH Student Eligibility:
- Current student enrolled in any SPH concentration
- Enrolled in or already completed a class in the Department of Journalism or some other documented experience with reporting

Diaspora Internship 2015

Funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the Diaspora Graduate Student Internship competition is open to U.S. citizens who are enrolled in the M.A. program of an accredited college or university in the United States. We strongly encourage students from HBCU’s and those without previous foreign travel experience to apply.
The internship will provide round trip travel toa West African country and a stipend of $2,500 to cover the cost of living for 6 to 8 weeks during the summer of 2015. The West African Research Center (WARC) in Dakar, Senegal may assist interns to locate lodging, and with other logistical matters.

1) Background:
The purpose of this internship is to provide support to Management Sciences for Health’s African Strategies for Health (ASH) project. ASH comprises a dynamic team working to improve the health status of populations across Africa through identifying and advocating for best practices, enhancing technical capacity, and engaging African regional institutions to address health issues in a sustainable manner. The ASH project works across the technical areas of maternal, newborn and child health, infectious diseases, health systems strengthening, monitoring and evaluation, and advocacy and communications.
The internship will contribute to improving the communication of ASH’s efforts and results across health areas through a focus on (1) supporting the development of and updates to the ASH website and (2) designing data visualization products.
2) Objectives:

We anticipate about 30 internship openings for summer 2015. These compensated internships are in the Global Health Bureau at USAID. The Global Health Fellows Program (GHFP-II) is a five year cooperative agreement implemented and managed by the Public Health Institute in partnership with Global Health Corps, GlobeMed, Management Systems International and PYXERA Global. GHFP-II is supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
GHFP-II's goal is to improve the effectiveness of USAID health programs by addressing the Agency's immediate and emerging human capacity needs. The program seeks to accomplish this goal first through the recruitment, placement and support of diverse health professionals at the junior, mid and senior levels. These program participants include fellows, interns, corporate volunteers and Foreign Service National professionals. The program then provides substantial performance management and career development support to participants, including annual working planning assistance, and ensures that professional development opportunities are available.
Looking to the future, GHFP-II also seeks to establish a pool of highly-qualified global health professionals that will ensure the Agency's ongoing technical leadership and effectiveness. This objective is supported by an extensive outreach program that brings global health opportunities and specialized career advice to a diverse range of interested individuals, with a particular focus on those underrepresented in the field of global health.
INTRODUCTION:
USAID advances and supports rights based voluntary family planning and reproductive health programs in more than 45 countries across the globe. As the largest bilateral donor, USAID's work in family planning is highly visible throughout the United States Government (USG) and international community. USAID's public affairs and communications efforts are, therefore, a critical component of USAID's involvement. They inform internal and external audiences - including key decision makers like the U.S. Congress - about USAID's objectives and progress.
The Population and Reproductive Health Communications Intern will be assigned to the Front Office of the Office of Population and Reproductive Health (PRH). The PRH Office provides technical leadership, strategic direction, implementation oversight and support to field missions, as well as partner coordination and performance tracking for the family planning component of the USG's Global Health Initiative. The Intern will coordinate with technical teams across the office and draft success stories, fact sheets, and blog posts related to USAID's family planning programs. These documents will be featured on www.usaid.gov and used for external events. The Intern will also have the opportunity to craft content and strategize new ideas for engaging audiences on USAID's social media channels. This position receives day to day guidance from the Senior Technical Advisor for External Affairs as well as the Communications Advisor as his/her onsite manager.

• Gaining a greater understanding of how to communicate successes in family planning and reproductive health programs.
• Gaining experience in communicating technical terms and ideas in easily understandable language.
