Kids Play International (KPI)  — a sport for development organization in Rwanda — is seeking a Rwanda Program Manager to oversee their work in Gatagara, Rwanda. KPI is looking for a strong leader with the talent, passion and commitment to effectively use sport to improve gender equality.

Founded in 2008 by three-time Olympian, Tracy Evans, KPI uses sport as a catalyst to promote gender equity in communities impacted by genocide through the powerful Olympic value of Fair Play. KPI works to build a better community with a bigger purpose by empowering KPI Coaches to deliver the Let’s Play Fair (LPF) program to girls and boys aged 7-18. LPF is a long term commitment to youth and their communities, and is implemented through educational sport activities and interactive discussions that aim to shift knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. Rooted in the belief that sport can be a powerful catalyst for social change, KPI strives to inspire the next generation to positively change gender norms in Rwanda.

Job Overview: Kids Play International is seeking an inspired Program Manager with a sport and sport for development background who will be responsible for providing strategic leadership while overseeing day-to-day programming in Gatagara, Rwanda. The PM will oversee both program activities and organizational operations, support KPI Coaches to implement high quality gender equity programs, help develop and conduct continued Coaches trainings, implement monitoring and evaluation tools, cultivate strategic in-country partnerships, contribute to business development and fundraising efforts, and provide strategic direction and recommendations for long term program development and model replication. The PM will work closely with and report to the Founder/President and be responsible for submitting regular reports and updates on organizational progress.

The ideal Program Manager candidate has an athletic background, professional experience with sport for development programs, international program management skills, overseas working/volunteering experience (preferably in Africa), and is willing and able to live comfortably in a rural village Rwanda.

MADERA is a French non-profit organization, working in Afghanistan for 25 years for the rehabilitation and development of rural economies destroyed by war. Our programmes build the capacities of rural communities and support local initiatives.

MADERA is active in many fields of rural development in Afghanistan:

  • Community development and National Solidarity Programme: support to local development projects;
  • Natural resources management: rangeland rehabilitation, forestry
  • Agricultural production: research and extension, support to producers’ groups, arboriculture, vegetable growing;
  • Livestock: support to veterinary services, vaccinations, animal husbandry, extension;
  • Income generating activities;
  • Civil engineering: access to water, irrigation, construction and rehabilitation of infrastructures.

MADERA implements these activities in 4 provinces in Eastern Afghanistan (Laghman, Kunar, Nuristan and Nangarhar), 1 province in Central Afghanistan (Wardak) and 1 in Western Afghanistan (Ghor).

The team is composed of approximately 250 Afghan employees and 5-6 expatriates.

The annual budget is around 3 million Euros.

Two well-known GH Faculty members are looking for a Research Assistant to engage in their new project!

Scope of work

We are looking for a student interested in participating in analyzing data on practice-based teaching and co-authoring a paper for a peer-reviewed journal.

The study will examine the comparative value of project-based learning versus more traditional teaching methods such as lecture, case study, or discussion-based teaching.. The study will explore how engaging with clients influences student learning, and also student perceptions of skill development and knowledge acquired using project-based learning. We will also explore the value of project-based learning as a preparation for future employment.

The student will assist with quantitative and qualitative analysis of course data generated from routine course evaluations and student e-portfolios.

Specific activities for analysis will entail:

  1. Compiling and organizing results of student evaluations from 2011 to the present.
  2. Conducting basic statistical analyses
  3. Writing up the results of quantitative analyses.
  4. Reviewing a sample of student e-portfolios generated from project-based learning to identify common themes related to study questions.
  5. Using qualitative analysis software such as Nvivo or Atlas TI to analyze data using grounded theory.
  6. Participate in the preparation of an oral presentation at a national educational conference in March 2015
  7. Co-author a paper for publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

The successful research assistant must be familiar with common statistical analysis, and qualitative analysis software.

This project could be completed as a directed study or a CE. There is no financial compensation available.

Responsibilities
• Assist with developing and implementing rigorous evaluations of development programs across sectors and in a variety of environments
• Conduct literature reviews and desk research
• Develop data collection instruments
• Support the efforts of local partners to recruit sites for large-scale evaluations
• Travel to the field to train local partners for data collection and oversee data collection quality
• Support researchers and programmers to conduct quantitative and/or qualitative analyses
• Write chapters of analytic reports or papers, and proposals for new projects
• Track financial progress of projects, prepare reports for monthly project reviews, assist with budget revisions and contract proposals
• Contribute to the growth and development of Mathematica's Center for International Policy Research and Evaluation
Qualifications
• Master’s degree in public policy, public health, economics, statistics, or a related field, or equivalent experience
• Strong knowledge of qualitative and/or quantitative research methods. Experience in impact evaluation design and implementation, preferably experience with quantitative and qualitative methods, data collection, and ability to strike balance between rigor and feasibility of implementation
• Working knowledge of current international policy issues in one or more of the following areas: education, public health, agriculture, infrastructure, labor/employment, nutrition, poverty reduction, or other relevant areas
• Two or more years of experience conducting international research or implementing international programs, with a focus in Asia, Africa, Latin America, or Eastern Europe.
• Strongly prefer candidates with professional experience working closely in the field with local colleagues, implementers, or data collection firms in developing countries, including collaborating and communicating effectively with a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to convey complex technical issues to a broad and diverse audience.
• Highly motivated and self-directed, with strong interpersonal skills
• Fluency in Spanish, French, or Hindi highly preferred but not required
