Saint-Bernard dogs

Why not make a trip to Martigny, where you can see the real St Bernards, the original mountain rescue dogs, which are still bred there and which love to go for walks with young Americans. Book via their website, at the Fondation Barry.

Dog Walking

The SGPA (Société Genevoise de la Protection des Animaux) opens on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday between 2pm and 5pm, during which time you can walk a dog around the beautiful countryside. Remember to take an ID or they won’t give you a dog ! On sunny Sundays, turn up around 1:30 pm, or you’ll have to wait before the first dogs come back due to the long queues.

Cow Fighting

The Swiss enjoy a rather novel past-time called  cow fighting. Nothing cruel, two cows lock horns in a contest of strength to decide who’s boss.  These spectacles take place in the Valais region from the Spring through to the end of September.

Les Désalpes

A must-see! Typical traditional Swiss event: watch the parade of the costumed cows come down from the mountain, see local people in traditional costume, listen to Alp horns, try some good food at the market.

September / October for the desaples.   In Switzerland see:
