Electrical Appliances

Electricity in Switzerland is 220 volts, 50 cycle AC. Most U.S. appliances require a voltage converter and an adapter to operate, although some dual-voltage items such as laptops may only require an adapter.

Safety point:  If you use an American 110-120v device in a European wall socket without a voltage converter you could harm yourself and damage the device.    Dual-voltage items 100-240v (INPUT: AC 100-240V/50-60Hz/65mA) are safe in Europe.  Consult the device’s instruction manual if in doubt.

A step down voltage converter will enable a 110 volts appliance to work on a 220 volts electrical circuit. You should only bring appliances which are dual-voltage as 110 volts appliances may not work even with a voltage converter.   Hairdryers, straighteners, shavers and power strips from the USA are not permitted in the residence, even with a voltage converter.   There is a limited supply of hairdryers & straighteners you can borrow, otherwise they are cheap to buy on the high street.

A dual voltage device will have this written on it.

Switzerland uses a 3-prong outlet system.  For an American device  you will need to purchase grounded type J Swiss travel plug adapters. Purchase these before you come over.

The French use a two prong type E/F system with a female for the ground. This will also work in most of Europe, but not the UK.
