Level 3: Grapevine Varieties And Their Varietal Wines

Prerequisite: a passing grade in Level 2

Dates: Meets for fourteen weeks; January and September start dates
Through tutored tastings, class discussions, and reading assignments, this survey course provides advanced wine students with a thorough knowledge of the world’s grapevine varieties and their wines, from well-known and highly regarded examples to those less known but with great potential.
By the end of Level 3, students will be able to:
- Identify the key sensory characteristics of the world’s most important and potentially important varietal wines.
- Analyze wine sensorially and translate those analyses into detailed and accurate annotations.
- Understand how clonal and climatic factors affect wine character.
- Understand the historic, cultural, genetic, viticultural, enological and market context for evolution of vine varieties and their wines.
