Listen for:

  • Tone and pitch of voice (and changes in pitch)
  • Loudness and pressure of speech
  • Sighing, throat-clearing, a catch in the throat, and other expressive non-speech sounds
  • Hesitation sounds and words (uh, um, well…); changes in speed of speaking
  • Stuttering or stammering
  • Nervous laughter
