Using a Windows PC for Remote Access
- Windows 7: Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Remote Desktop Connection.
- Windows 8.x, 10.x: Switch to the Start screen and type the word “remote.” Then, click or tap the Remote Desktop Connection search result.
- Once prompted, enter your office computer’s name followed by the port number :513
(i.e., eso111-pcXXX.ad.bu.edu:513). How to Find your PC’s Name. - Click Connect.
- If the Remote Desktop Connection is successful, you will get a screen displaying your login prompt as if you were in front of your office computer. Login with your BU login name (AD\xxxxxxxx) and password.
- Log off or Disconnect from the office computer to terminate your Remote Desktop connection.
- Upon completion, disconnect from the active VPN session.
It is highly recommended that, once you have your PC’s name, you test the process by connecting to it remotely from a colleague’s work desktop. Note that you will NOT need to use the VPN when testing in this manner.
