General Safe Computing Practices

  • Do not share your passwords.
  • Use good password practices and change your password as often as needed.
  • Remember to completely log out of all web applications on the Internet.
  • To prevent identity theft, don’t share your Social Security number, bank account number, passwords, or any other private information on the web or via e-mail.
  • Identify fraudulent e-mails and delete them immediately.
  • To avoid spyware from being installed on your computer.
    1. Don’t click on links in pop-up windows.
    2. Chose “no” when asked unexpected questions.
    3. Don’t click on links promising free online virus/spyware protection.
  • Be wary of all e-mail attachments, even if they come from someone you know.
  • Use SecureMail to encrypt all e-mails containing sensitive/personal information.
  • Do not download or install any files from the Internet. This is a violation of your Network Security Agreement. Contact the ESO Network Administrator beforehand if a specific application or browser plug-in is required for business purposes.
  • Do not open any files or install programs onto your PC or the network from floppy disks or USB flash drives, unless previously scanned for viruses. Contact the ESO Network Administrator beforehand if a specific application is required for business purposes.
  • Scan your floppy disks or other removable media often, especially if you swap disks or share USB flash drives with friends and associates, or bring files from home or another off-site location.
