BlackBerry Support

BlackBerry personal digital assistants (PDAs), created by Research in Motion (RIM), can be used to read e-mail and calendars from our Exchange Server, as well as function as cell phones.

Here at BU, BlackBerry devices connect to the Exchange Server through the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES). This allows data to be actively pushed to your BlackBerry, wirelessly keeping it in sync and up-to-date with your Exchange mailbox.

How do I buy a BlackBerry?

If you are interested in purchasing a BlackBerry device to conduct BU business, we recommend that you first contact the UIS BlackBerry Support Team at UIS-BBSupport@bu.edu. They will guide you in selecting the most appropriate model and cellular service provider (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.) based on your business and travel needs.

Once you determine your BlackBerry model and cellular service provider, you will need to contact Telecommunications at 617-353-2097 or phone@bu.edu to provide pricing for the wireless data access plan for BES connectivity and other desired options, as well as make the purchase. ESO does not purchase BlackBerry devices for staff.

Important: Personally-owned BlackBerry devices must also have a wireless data plan for e-mail in order to take advantage of synching with an Exchange mailbox through BES.

Getting Connected

ESO facilitates the connection of all BlackBerry devices with a wireless data access plan for BES and the Exchange server. Please submit your request for assistance to ESO-NetHelp@bu.edu.

BlackBerry Devices Without BES Data Plan

Unfortunately, if your BlackBerry does not have an accompanying wireless data access plan for connection to BES, we cannot sync it wirelessly with your Exchange mailbox.
