Virus Protection
All files on the Enrollment and Student Affairs Local Area Network are automatically scanned for viruses when they are accessed or modified, using Symantec AntiVirus (SAV) Corporate Edition (CE). SAVCE is installed on all PCs, laptops, and file servers.
There are, however, instances when viruses can be introduced into the networking environment. Once in, a virus can propagate and infect files and/or PCs, causing problems ranging from annoying pop-up messages to complete destruction of data and operating system files.
Automatic Scanning Schedule
- Network files are automatically scanned every time they are opened and closed. In addition, the entire contents of the network servers are scanned for viruses daily beginning at 2am.
- While all workstations are monitored for virus activity, every Wednesday at 2am a full virus scan is performed on all files on your local hard drive.
Infected Files
- Viruses found on the Network:
- If a virus is found during a scan, an initial attempt is made to clean it. If that fails, the file is quarantined in a secure location on the network and the ESO Network Operations Group is notified. Once a file is quarantined, it cannot be accessed and therefore cannot infect any other files and/or PCs.
- Viruses found on local drives or in memory:
- The Symantec AntiVirus client informs the user that an infected file or memory location has been found and and then make an initial attempt to clean or quarantine it.
- Please take note of the virus name and variant, and contact NetHelp at ESO-NetHelp@bu.edu or call the NetHelp Line at x3-7328 immediately. State that a virus was found during a scan, and provide the virus name and variant. The issue will be handled promptly.
