THE INDEX
THE STAFF OF
PARTISAN
REVIEW
have compiled and arranged this index for
accuracy and ease of use. Many writers whose names are now well-known
were, when first published in
PR,
trying out versions of their public names;
often early copyedi tors and typesetters were uncertain about the spelling,
transliteration, or diacritical marks of these names, especially in the case of
writers from Eastern Europe or Russia whose work had never before been
printed in the West. Wherever practical, mistakes originally made in issues
of the magazine have been rectified and standard transliterations have been
substituted (e.g., "Jurgen Habermas" for "Juergen Habermas," etc.).
A brief word about alphabetization: Latin American authors may be
found underneath the
first
of their last names, as is usual practice-e.g.,
"Vargas Llosa, Mario," or "Ortega y Gasset,Jose." Pseudonyms are treated
as one name, as is also usual: thus, look for"Saint-John Perse," rather than
"Perse, Saint-John"; and though "M. McC." obviously refers to Mary
McCarthy, she is listed under "M. McC." rather than "McC., M." Authors
whose names begin with "de," "del,"
"D'"
and the like should be searched
for under that prefix (with the exceptions of Tocqueville and Sade), and
hyphenated names are found under the first of their components:
"Compton-Burnett,
Ivy."
ARTICLES AND COMMENTS, FICTION, and POETRY are all arranged alpha–
betically by author. ARTICLES AND COMMENTS includes illustrations, car–
toons, and magazine covers designed by a particular individual. FICTION
includes drama. POETRY is cross-referenced by translator, where the trans–
lator was considered to be of as much importance as the original author–
for instance, Robert Lowell's versions of Baudelaire and Montale have
been referenced under Lowell's own name as well as those of their origi–
nal authors. Where a group of poems by the same author are printed
together, the page number given is for the page on which they begin.
BooK REVIEWS are alphabetized by author, and arranged chronologl–
cal ly within each author's section; similarly, BooK REVIEWERS are listed
first alphabetically by reviewer, and then chronologically. These two
important sections are fully cross-referenced. For instance, Elizabeth
Hardwick's 1959 review of the novel
Henderson the Rain King
by Saul
