Bowen Zhang won the 2016 SE Outstanding PhD Dissertation Award for his dissertation:
Role of Control, Communication, and Markets in Smart Building Operation

His research recognized that fundamentally new power distribution concepts will be necessary to meet the emerging challenges of intermittent renewable energy resources (wind turbines and solar) combined with rapidly increasing intermittent load demands from electric vehicle charging. After introducing a revolutionary new concept of packetized electric power distribution, the thesis showed how internet-inspired concepts of fairness with guaranteed quality of service can be used to guide the implementation of control protocols for smart-building micrograms.
