The Center for Information and Systems Engineering (CISE) hosted its 3rd Annual CISE Graduate Student Workshop (CGSW 3.0), on January, 14, 2016 and was organized by CISE students, Sepideh Pourazarm, Xi Yu and Feng Nan.  This event, featured talks from 16 CISE graduate students and three newly affiliated CISE faculty bringing together CISE students and faculty to exchange ideas and build community. CGSW 3.0 is also a unique opportunity for students to share their research and practice their presentation skills.
Student presentations were grouped into four topic related sessions; Healthcare and Biology, Networked Systems, Optimization and Control and Energy Management. Each session featured four presentations by CISE graduate students.
The three new CISE affiliated faculty, Professors Manuel Egele (ECE), Konstantinos Spiliopoulos (Math/Stat), and Brian Kulis (ECE) presented an overview of their research projects at the end of the first three sessions.
Students in the audience voted for the Best CISE student presentations.
The prize winners were:

  • Julia Lima Fleck: “Optimal Design of Personalized Prostate Cancer Therapy using Infinitesimal Perturbation Analysis”
  • Matthew Morse: “Bridging the Gap between Center and Tail for Multi-Scale Processes”
  • Joshua Rapp: “Spatially Adaptive Noise Censoring for Photon-Efficient Active Imaging”

Each year, the organizers of the workshop devise a game to identify the Most Attentive CISE (MACS) student. This is the student who has attended the most talks. This year’s winner, Yasaman Khazaeni, took the prize for her keen knowledge of Boston landmarks.
“The CISE Graduate Student Workshop was an exciting event and impeccably organized.  I was impressed by the quality of the research and the student presentations, which covered many areas of research within CISE,” said Ioannis Paschalidis, CISE Director. “I thought that the intellectual content was comparable to some of the best conferences I have recently attended.”
