BWHS at the American Public Health Association (November 2019)


This short film highlights the goals of the Black Women’s Health Study and the contributions of dedicated BWHS participants. The film was viewed at the annual meeting of the American Public Health Association in November 2019. This annual meeting draws thousands of public health professionals, including those working in service delivery, public health policy, and research. Sharing the study’s work and future plans with communities of those who are in a position to take action is a crucial part of the mission of the BWHS.


25th Anniversary Webinar Series

In honor of the contributions that BWHS participants have made to Black women’s health

On Tuesday, April 13th, 2021 this final webinar in the BWHS 25th Anniversary series featured:

  • an overview of breast cancer research findings from the BWHS
  • updates on new research areas within the BWHS
  • National Institutes of Health asks for research on health effects of structural racism
  • audience questions and discussion
  • a special performance from Sons of Serendip

The webinar was also livestreamed through Facebook.

COVID-19 in the BWHS and Beyond (click here for recording)

On Thursday, November 5, 2020, the second BWHS 25th Anniversary webinar featured:

  • presentations and discussion with Michelle Albert, MD, MPH (University of California, San Francisco/BWHS Collaborator), Linda Clayton, MD, MPH (Institute for Optimizing Health and Healthcare/BWHS Board Member), Yvette Cozier, DSc (Boston University/BWHS Investigator), and Ellen Grant, PhD, LCSW-R (Say Yes to Education/BWHS Board Member)
  • an overview of the COVID-19 pandemic and post-COVID conditions
  • information about the COVID-19 studies within the BWHS and at Massachusetts General Hospital, with a focus on the impact and recommendations regarding health visits and screening, mental health, and physical activity

This webinar concluded with a reading of Lucille Clifton’s poem “won’t you celebrate with me”.  The poem was read by poet and essayist Crystal Williams, BA, MFA, Boston University Vice President and Associate Provost for Community and Inclusion.
