Message from President Brown about Allston Fire
April 28, 2013
Dear Friends,
With sadness I must report that there was a fire early this morning in an Allston residence where several of our students lived. One person, a Boston University student, has died as a result, and others have sustained injuries. The fire is currently under investigation by the Boston Police and Fire Departments. The authorities have not released the name of the deceased individual. The injuries to the other students have been characterized as non-life-threatening. The University is providing housing and other support to the Boston University students who have been dislocated.
Our thoughts and prayers go to the family and friends of the individual who has died and all the victims of the fire.
This tragedy comes close on the heels of the Boston Marathon losses, which have so affected our community. We are working to marshal counseling and support resources for all those touched by the fire while continuing to meet the needs of others who have been affected by the Marathon bombings.
Updates on this tragedy will be provided—as information is available—by BU Today. BU Today will also provide detailed information on counseling resources that are available through the Dean of Students Office, through our University chaplains, the Student Health Services, and through the Sexual Assault Response & Prevention Center (SARP).
I recognize that these have been challenging days for Boston and for Boston University. Once again we are grieving the loss of a member of our student community. While we continue to work to provide support and care to those most in need, each of us should hold close all our friends and colleagues, as we all have lost part of our community in the tragedies of the Marathon bombing and this morning’s fire.
Sincerely,
Robert A. Brown
President
