Nearly a decade before federal legislation created Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, BU erected its own memorial to the late civil rights advocate, who earned his doctorate of philosophy in systematic theology at BU. This April 1975 photo records Chilean metal sculptor Sergio Castillo welding some of the final pieces of his sculpture honoring King (GRS’55, Hon.’59). Entitled Free at Last, Castillo’s work features 50 doves flying in formation, representing peace in all 50 states. The sculpture’s granite base is engraved with some of King’s famous quotations on peace and equality. The tribute to King, which sits in the center of Marsh Plaza, was formally unveiled on May 16, 1975. The base’s original granite panels were replaced as part of a renovation of Marsh Plaza, which was completed in 1999. In October 2001, BU presented Morehouse College in Atlanta, King’s undergraduate alma mater, with the four panels. The slabs, which together weigh 8,160 pounds, were installed in the college’s King Memorial Chapel. Castillo, who taught at BU for a time, also created Explosion, located in front of the Metcalf Center for Science and Engineering, and Earth Orbit, in the SMG lobby. Photo by BU Photo Services. |
