"Damn Yankees!" -- the cry of every diehard Boston Red Sox fan: A scene from the BU Drama Club's production of Damn Yankees, based on Douglas Wallop's The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant, which gives a new twist to the legend of Faust when a middle-aged baseball fan sells his soul to the devil for the chance to play for the Washington Senators. In the early 1960s, when this play was performed at BU, the Red Sox were in the midst of a long slump, posting eight consecutive losing seasons from 1959 through 1966. Since the end of World War II, the Red Sox have won the American League pennant four times, only to lose the World Series each time in the seventh game. The Yankees, however, have posted 26 World Series wins during that time period. But as the oft-repeated sentiment goes, this season could be the one . . . Photo from the 1963 Hub yearbook |
