The way we were: The recent announcement of the closing of Boston's Nickelodeon Theatre, off Commonwealth Avenue, presents a reel cinematic loss to both the BU community and Boston moviegoers. Long dubbed an "art house" rather than a movie theater because it was once Boston's premier site to see foreign and independent films, the five-screen Nickelodeon was taken over by the Loews theater chain 12 years ago. Although the chain promised movie offerings would stay out of the mainstream mix, the marquee in this 1991 picture shows this wasn't the case. The Nickelodeon is one of 21 movie theaters around the United States that Loews will immediately close. Loews is seeking bankruptcy protection and has plans to be taken over by an investment group.
