A fake spring break offers advantages

By David J. Craig

Freshmen who aren't fortunate enough to visit the Caribbean's sunny shores for spring break will get to do the next best thing on Friday, February 23, at 8 p.m. in Sargent Gym. BU's first annual Spring Break Send-off is an all-freshman event that is part dance party and part luau.

Featured will be live music performed by Jamm Down, a reggae-calypso band, and a dance floor laid out around a catwalk where BU athletes will model clothing during a fashion show.

"The theme is going to be a Caribbean-type luau party, and the atmosphere is going to be very festive," says Keith Tavares (CGS'88, CAS'92), Boston University Alumni vice president for student and young alumni programs and an event organizer. "There will be lots of decorations, including lighted palm trees, luau huts, and lots of catered food and drink."

In addition, Universal Studios will be on hand promoting a new movie, and there will be free raffle drawings for more than 20 prizes, including a DVD player, a CD burner, a television, portable CD players, and a $500 gift certificate from Garber Travel. The BU Wellness Center will provide soda and fruit juice "mocktails," and the BUA will be giving away free beach towels.

The event is cosponsored by the Student Alumni Council and the Student Activities Office.

"The mission of the Student Alumni Council is to provide venues that create a sense of community among students, a sense of alma mater, and give students a chance to interact with alumni," says Tavares, an administrative assistant in the Division of Military Education. "We coordinate the freshman barbecue and gift bag giveaway event every September, and we thought it would be fun to organize something in the spring semester, as well."

The event lasts from 8 to 11 p.m. and is free for all BU freshmen, with a student ID. For more information, call the Student Activities Office at 353-3635.
