Brother,
can you spare? By Robin Shelton (CAS'01, COM'01) If you can pick up a ball that weighs 16 pounds, walk with it in a straight line for four steps, and swing your arm as you walk, claims the Boston University Bowling Association (BUBA) on its Web site, then you can bowl.
BUBA, a 10-pin bowling club open to the BU community, regardless of skill level, is relatively new to campus. Organized in 1998, the club has brought together dozens of students who enjoy the sport or want to try it. The BUBA schedules six Saturday afternoon trips by chartered bus every semester to Boston Bowl in Dorchester, normally an hour's T-ride from campus. A $9 fee includes three games of bowling, shoe rental, and bus transportation; for every six bowlers, the fee is discounted $1. Jonathan Corda (ENG'02) has been BUBA president for the past two years, and has been involved with the club since it started. "I was overly excited when I saw the flyers my freshman year," says Corda, who has been bowling as long as he can remember. His average of 182.0 tops BUBA's stats, and he bowled a 259 at the club's last alley outing (the highest score possible is 300). Participants' averages range from close to 200 down to 58. But first-timers need not be discouraged from lacing up bowling shoes and trying to keep the ball out of the gutter for a few hours, because the object is simply to enjoy the sport. BUBA also holds raffles and matches against other schools,
including a recent get-together with bowlers from M.I.T. Prizes range
from a game of bowling to lunch at Boston Bowl. |
