There's snow place like Sargent Camp: "With the worry of exams only a dull memory," reads The Hub yearbook from 1960, "110 students trekked to Sargent Camp in Peterborough, N.H., to participate in the annual Winter Carnival." Skiing was the primary winter activity at Sargent Camp once it was winterized in the late 1940s, recalls Sargent Dean Emeritus George Makechnie (SED'29,'31, Hon.'79). "We had ice skating and dog teams," he says, "but everyone wanted to learn how to ski." Makechnie consulted with New England foresters in order to create "the proper slope with just a little bit of a bend in it." Photo from The Hub yearbook, 1960 |
