Newcomers to the Charles River Campus, where the University
has lived by degrees for more than half a century, may be surprised to
learn that going to BU used to mean going to Copley Square. Most departments
were on or near Boylston Street until the westward migration began in
the late 1930s. This circa 1920 postcard shows Huntington Avenue in the
foreground, with Trinity Church to the right. In the center is the College
of Business Administration (now SMG). BU purchased the building from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1916 when MIT moved to Cambridge
and BU set about expanding its business program. The New England Life
headquarters now occupies the site. From the collection of M. B. Shavelson |
