The past year captured in close-up

In the show-stopper “Seasons of Love” number from the musical Rent, composer and lyricist Jonathan Larson famously asks, “How do you measure, measure a year?”

One way is by reviewing the many “Close Up” photographs that graced BU Today from last August to Commencement. With Memorial Day behind us, we thought we’d take a look back at the 2011–2012 school year in a slideshow featuring some of our most memorable “Close-Ups.”

There were sunrises and moonrises; autumn leaves, snow, and spring magnolia blossoms; sobering, reflective moments that include observances of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Veterans Day, World AIDS Day, and Take Back the Night; jubilant celebrations such as a costume run at Halloween, the Hindu spring religious festival of colors Holi, and the 2011 Quidditch World Cup in New York—and scores in between. And not surprisingly, the slideshow begins and ends with pictures of parents hugging their sons and daughters—as they drop them off last August and as they congratulate them at Commencement.
