Tanglewood students show a summer’s labor in Saturday performance

Click the slide show above to hear students speak about their experiences at Tanglewood.

At the Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI), set in the lush Berkshires landscape of Lenox, Mass., approximately 350 gifted high school musicians, who meet rigorous admissions requirements, spend their summer vacation immersing themselves in studying, practicing, and performing their craft.

Since 1966, BUTI has offered programs that range in length from two to six weeks and are taught by well-known faculty, comprising instructors at BU’s College of Fine Arts and musical artists from the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The eight-week summer season includes workshops for chamber ensembles and individual instruments and seminars for orchestra, wind ensemble, voice, composition, and piano.

Conductor David Hoose, a professor and director of orchestral activities at the CFA school of music, will lead the BUTI Young Artists Orchestra in its final performance of the 2007 season, a concert at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, at Tanglewood’s Ozawa Hall. The performance will feature Copland’s Symphony No. 3 and Charles Loeffler’s La mort de Tintagiles with viola d’amore soloist Melissa Reardon. Tickets are $11 and will be sold at the door prior to the performance. For details and reservations, call 413-637-1430.

Last season, BU Today spent a weekend at BUTI talking to young artists about their experiences at one of the country's most prestigious summer music programs for high school students.
