Bahaa Saleh, chair of the College of Engineering department of electrical and computer engineering, recently received a 2006 Kuwait Prize for Basic Sciences for his extensive contributions in the field of quantum optics.

“I am being recognized for making advances in the use of twin photons for applications such as metrology and imaging,” says Saleh, deputy director of the Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems.

The Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) annually awards two Kuwait Prizes, one for Kuwaiti citizens and one for citizens of other Arab countries, in five fields. The goal of the program, according to the KFAS Web site, is to recognize intellectual and scientific advancement and to support efforts to raise the standard of culture in various fields.

A fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Optical Society of America, and the Guggenheim Foundation, Saleh is the author or coauthor of two books, chapters in seven books, and more than 350 papers. Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, emir of Kuwait, will present Saleh with a gold medal and a cash award this year.
