Adventurer to Talk About Flight, Life, and New Directions

Bertrand Piccard, a scientist and adventurer who in 1999 circumnavigated the globe in a hot-air balloon, speaks this Thursday about how a balloon flight came to symbolize his philosophy of life.

A balloon is a captive of the winds that propel it, just as a human is a prisoner of his certitudes, problems, or destiny, says Piccard. A balloon can change altitude to find currents that will change its direction, and so humans can rise up psychologically or spiritually to reassume responsibility for the direction of their existence.

An Inspirational Lecture with Bertrand Piccard, hosted by the Office of the Provost in cooperation with the Consulate of Switzerland, takes place Thursday, November 15, at 10 a.m. at the Photonics Center, Room 206, 8 St. Mary’s St. The event is free and open to the public, but an RSVP is requested by today, November 13, to emil@shareboston.org. A Swiss-style reception follows the lecture at 11:30 a.m.
