Remembering Howard Gotlieb

January 19, 2006
Twitter Facebook

The Boston University community celebrated the life of Howard B. Gotlieb, founder of BU’s Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, with a special service at Marsh Chapel on January 6, 2006. Gotlieb, who has been called the “father of modern archiving,” died on December 1, 2005, at age 79. The center contains the archives of some 2,000 individuals from fields ranging from literature to religion to politics.

The service included readings and comments from several friends of Gotlieb’s, welcomed by master of ceremonies Jack Williams. Among the speakers were President Robert A. Brown, William D. Adams, actress Angela Lansbury, President Emeritus John Silber, Rachel Silber Devlin, and Vita Paladino, managing director of the Gotlieb Center.

Gotlieb was also remembered in a memorial service, which included a eulogy delivered by Rabbi Donald Pollock, on Friday, December 2, 2005.
