For the next few weeks, local theater-goers can visit Cuba, Poland, Russia, and Spain by way of the 10th annual College of Fine Arts Fringe Festival. Running from October 13 through November 5, the festival showcases two full-length musical plays, two short operas, and excerpts from Jin Xiang’s The Savage Land, a contemporary Chinese opera.

In Playing for Time, American playwright Arthur Miller describes the true stories of female prisoners at Auschwitz who survived the camp by performing in its orchestra. Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, written by Tom Stoppard, with music by André Previn, takes place in a Soviet asylum, where two men — one genuinely mentally ill and one a political prisoner — share the same name and the same cell. Composer Jules Massenet’s opera La Navarraise traces a woman’s quest to reunite with her lover amid the ravages of war, and Jorge Martín’s Before Night Falls is a one-act opera based on the memoir of Cuban poet and gay dissident Reinaldo Arenas.

All performances take place in Studio 210 of the Boston University Theatre, 264 Huntington Ave. Tickets are $7; BU community members may receive one free ticket with their BU ID, available at the door only and subject to availability. Tickets can be purchased online, by phone at 617-933-8600, or at the Boston University Theatre box office.
