Call for Papers
The Crisis of Democracy in Healthcare: General Call for Papers
Democracy has consistently been considered the best form of government for allowing citizens’ voices to be heard. However, this is not always true in practice. Recent events in the United States have created climates where many voters were dissatisfied with not only the outcomes of elections, but with the policy choices that followed. This dissatisfaction can especially be seen with health policy. Many people feel as though their voices were not being heard at all and that their governments failed them. Many people also feel as if their elected officials have misguided agendas and that they should take matters into their own hands. This led our editorial board to the question: is there a crisis of democracy in 2018?
The next few volumes of the American Journal of Law and Medicine will have the theme of The Crisis of Democracy in Healthcare. This is a call for papers that examine topics of comparative health law, regulatory matters, election challenges, and public opinion’s impact on public health and health law. Papers that tackle other unique perspectives on the crisis of democracy will also be considered. This is an open call for papers from any academic perspective, including, but not limited to, law, public health, medicine, economics, bioethics, history and anthropology. Please submit a manuscript, a cover letter, an abstract, and a resume/CV.* Topics will be broadly considered and normal American Journal of Law and Medicine Submission Guidelines apply. Papers should be a minimum of thirty pages in length with at least 100 references.
The Crisis of Democracy in Healthcare: Symposium Call for Papers
The 2019 American Journal of Law and Medicine symposium will be titled, The Crisis of Democracy in Healthcare: Non-legislative Efforts to Change Health Law. Panels will discuss the crisis of democracy in healthcare in four specific areas: executive and administrative law, judicial action, public opinion research, and federalism. Again, this is an open call for papers from any academic perspective, including, but not limited to, law, public health, medicine, economics, bioethics, history and anthropology.
Accepted papers will be published in the Symposium Edition and presented at the symposium at Boston University. Please send a one page abstract, as well as complete contact information and a resume/CV, to ajlm@bu.edu by August 15, 2018. Selected authors will be notified by August 22, 2018. Full-length articles should be submitted by early January 2019 for inclusion in the symposium. Completed articles must be no longer than 7,000 words, include citations, and must touch on some aspect of the four categories given above and how it relates to the Crisis of Democracy in Healthcare. AJLM pays for reasonable travel expenses of invited authors.
IF YOU WISH TO BE CONSIDERED FOR BOTH THE SYMPOSIUM ISSUE AND GENERAL ISSUE, PLEASE INDICATE THIS IN YOUR SUBMISSION PACKAGE. PLEASE FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES FOR BOTH CALLS FOR PAPERS.
