SPRG 2026 Schedule
| Section | Instructor | Location | Schedule | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A1 | Yust | CFA 410 | TR 3:30 pm-4:45 pm | Theories of Rhythm and Time: One of the most basic universals of music, across all styles and traditions, is that it takes place in time and shapes our experience of time. Exactly how musicians, composers, and music theorists have thought about musical rhythm and musical time has changed radically across history and across cultures. In this class we will broadly survey theories and philosophies of rhythm and time from the development of Western notation in the 14th century and modern time signatures in the 18th century, 20th century Hindustani rhythmic theory, groove and cyclic rhythm in afro-diasporic music, and philosophy of time in work of 20th and 21st century composers. Students will have opportunities to explore the material in the form of critical writing, music analysis, composition, and/or musical performances. |
