Selected Topics in Song Literature

CFA MP 731

Focus on the nineteenth-century Lied. Song study will occur in the context of the socio-political transformation of German-speaking lands during this period, which brought about a great flowering of folk poetry, literature, and musical achievement. Composers will include Brahms, Gustav and Alma Mahler, Richard Strauss, Hugo Wolf, and the early second Viennese school.

Song in the English Musical Renaissance: This class will study repertoire arising from the sudden awakening of English song from a 200-year slumber.  The songs will be examined in the context of the folk song movement as well the sociological developments that underlay this rebirth. Composers will include Ralph Vaughan-Williams, George Butterworth, Roger Quilter, and Ivor Gurney.
