This course explores the role of sonority, music, voice, and listening in Black and African-derived religious and spiritual practices, relying on Africana cosmologies, ethnomusicology, sound studies, and the phenomenology of listening to understand both philosophies and functional applications of sound and music in Black devotional traditions from the Caribbean, Latin America, and West and Central Africa in the past and today. Other key points of inquiry: cultural adaptation, syncretism, aesthetics, authority, space/environment, gender, sexuality, maroonage, and contemporary artistic practice. Open to MM, DMA, MA students. Prerequisites: 600+ level MH course or Instructor Permission. Meets w/ CFA MH871.
