BU Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine Required Courses

• MED MS 316: Neurology Clerkship (4 weeks)
  The purpose of the third-year clerkship in Neurology is to provide the basics of neurological disease seen in inpatient and outpatient neurology settings. This Clerkship focuses in immersing the student to Neurology and prepare them for any encounter of Neurological disease in the student's future career in any chosen specialty. The clerkship will teach the basics of taking a neurological history and performing an examination with the goal of localizing the lesion in the nervous system. It will also teach how to synthesize information from history and physical in order to produce a differential diagnosis and treatment plan. You will be exposed to the outpatient clinic where you will encounter chronic disorders and to the inpatient where you will be involved in treatment of acute neurological disorders. Students will also learn the indications and contraindications for performing LPs and know the general approach for performing LPs. In addition, the clerkship offers support to those considering Neurology as a future career.
• MED MS 400: Surgery Subinternships: MED MS 400, MED MS 400.1a, MED MS 400.1B, MED MS 400.2, MED MS 400.3, and MED MS 403.1
  Surgery Subinternships The Department of Surgery offers fourth-year students the opportunity to be subinterns at a variety of our major teaching hospitals. The student will be assigned patients to admit and follow during their hospital course. The student will work with the resident and attending staff in managing the patient's surgical problems in the operating room, on the inpatient wards, and in the ambulatory setting. Attendance at morning and afternoon rounds, morbidity and mortality conferences, and other teaching conferences is an important part of the rotation as well as being on call with residents. Instruction will focus on principles and pathophysiology of surgical disease, pre- and postoperative care, indication for surgical intervention, and procedural skills. This rotation is especially suitable for any student interested in more intensive training in surgery than is possible during the required third-year surgery clerkship. * MED MS 400.00: General Surgery, Cape Cod * MED MS 400.1a: General Surgery, Vascular Service * MED MS 400.1b: Surgical Oncology Service * MED MS 400.2: General Surgery and SICU, VA Boston Healthcare System * MED MS 400.3: Acute Care Trauma Surgery, Menino Pavilion * MED MS 403.1: Surgical Intensive Care Unit
• MED MS 404: Surgical Subspecialties
  MED MS 404.1: All fourth-year medical students, as part of the Selectives, will have a choice to rotate in the Surgical Subspecialties. The Surgical Education office offers a four-week rotation consisting of two subspecialty rotations (two weeks each). Students will have the opportunity to rank their preferences for the subspecialties, limited by capacity. Students' choices may not be guaranteed. Options include: Anesthesia (BMC or VA), Neurosurgery (BMC), Thoracic (BMC), Ophthalmology (BMC or VA), Orthopedics (BMC or VA), Otolaryngology (BMC), Plastic Surgery (BMC), and Urology (BMC or VA). Of note, Fourth Year Medical students who rotated in Anesthesia during the Surgery Clerkship may not rotate in Anesthesia again as part of the Surgical Subspecialties.
• MED MS 410: Geriatrics Clerkship (4 weeks)
  This four-week clerkship provides students with the basic knowledge and skills to participate in the care of older adults. Students will learn about common geriatric syndromes, understand, and use functional assessment in the evaluation of older adults, work with an interdisciplinary team to develop care plans, learn about home care and what is possible to provide medically for older patients living in the community. Students will participate in clinic, nursing home visits and home visits with clinicians to provide medical care for older patients. In addition, students will complete on-line assignments, attend lectures, prepare a narrative focused on My Life My Story (MLMS), complete a Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) worksheet, create an end of life (EOL) project, and prepare an evidence-based medicine (EBM) assignment.
• MED MS 412: Radiology Clerkship Selective
  Diagnostic imaging with emphasis on understanding strengths, weaknesses, appropriate descriptive terminology, organized approach to analysis of findings, and most appropriate use of various imaging modalities. Significant emphasis is also placed on appropriate use of image-guided diagnosis and treatment, the interpretation of radiologic reports, and communication, both with patients and with radiologists. Students have several opportunities to present findings in formal and informal conference settings, to gain experience in clear and logical use of the language of medicine and of imaging.
