SED ME 560: Mathematics for Teaching: Algebra
Revisits school algebra from an advanced perspective, preparing teachers to teach algebra with understanding. Topics include variables, patterns, functions, linear algebra, manipulatives, technology, standards, and curriculum in the teaching and learning of algebra. 4 cr. -

SED ME 563: Problem Solving in Mathematics
This course explores the teaching and learning of mathematics through solving sets of challenging problems. Topics include: research on problem solving and how its design and implementation can be supported in the classroom. 4cr. -
SED ME 564: Advanced Mathematical Problem Solving
Refinement of strategies for solving problems and developing proofs via explorations in higher mathematics. Focuses on how to pose problems and write proofs that involve fundamental mathematical concepts and quandaries. 4cr, 2nd sem. -
SED ME 565: Mathematics for Teaching: Calculus
Revisits calculus from an advanced perspective, preparing teachers to understand calculus from the perspective of a student and a teacher. Topics such as limits derivatives, integrals, approximation, and applications and modeling are revisited with a focus on their connections. 4cr, 2nd sem. -
SED ME 570: Algebra: Making the Connections
Connections are made and explored among concepts of algebra from college level courses such as linear algebra, abstract algebra, and number theory, and those same concepts taught at high school and middle schools. -
SED ME 580: Connecting Seminar: Geometry
Focuses on how concepts developed in university-level geometry courses connect to and form the foundation for the middle and high school geometry curriculum. 2cr, either sem. -
SED ME 581: Advanced Topics in Algebra for Teachers
Exploration of advanced topics in algebra with emphasis on functions and the mathematical structures of group, ring, integral domain, and field. Connections are made among advanced algebraic concepts and middle and high school mathematics. 2 or 4 cr, 1st sem. -
SED ME 584: Inquiry for School Teachers
This course introduces graduate students in mathematics education and in-service mathematics teachers to the theory and practice of teacher-led inquiry. This course prepares teachers to conduct research studies for their own practice, including research design, data collection, data analysis and reporting findings. 4cr, Summer 1 -
SED ME 589: Designing Professional Development Programs in Mathematics Education
Students examine models for the professional development of mathematics teachers; conduct needs assessment of the teachers in their target groups; and design professional development programs that respond to those needs. Programs focus on upgrading mathematical content knowledge and pedagogical and assessment practices. 4cr. -
SED ME 590: Field Study: Mathematics Education 5-8 or 8-12
Open only to matriculated graduate students who have completed ME589 and have approval of the Field Study director. On-site conduct of the professional development program designed in ME589. Variable cr, either sem. -

Only for matriculated graduate students who hold an initial license and are seeking current professional licensure. Full-time student-teaching in selected middle schools. Six weeks; Minimum 150 hours required. 4cr, either sem. -

Required of students who wish to apply for standard certification as mathematics teachers, 5-9. Integrates content area knowledge and pedagogical theory and practice. May include curriculum deelopment and assessment projects. Minimum 400 hours required. -
SED ME 701: Learning Theory and Epistemology in Mathematics Education
This seminar course for advanced graduate students explores the contemporary and historical research and theory with regard to the learning and knowing of mathematics. 4 cr. -
SED ME 702: Advanced Study of Mathematics Teaching and Teacher Education
This seminar course for advanced graduate students examines theoretical and empirical research in the areas of mathematics teaching and mathematics teacher education. 4cr. -
SED ME 703: Curriculum Research and Theory in Mathematics Education
This seminar course for advanced graduate students explores contemporary and historical research and theory in mathematics education with regard to curriculum, including its analysis, use, design, and effects. 4cr. -
SED ME 851: Seminar: Mathematics Education
This seminar course for advanced graduate students examines historic and current research on specific topics in mathematics education. Topics chosen that focus on current issues in the field. 4cr.
