  • SED SC 539: Explaining Science: a Philosophical Perspective
    This course provides a basic overview of the history, philosophy, and sociology of science (HPSS, sometimes called "science studies") especially as these subjects relate to science teaching and learning. 4 cr.
  • SED SC 570: Science Teaching Methods I
    This course emphasizes pedagogical content knowledge through the exploration of methods for teaching science across disciplines at the middle and high school levels. Emphasis is on the design of learning experiences that integrate intellectually sound and developmentally appropriate content, scientific thinking strategies, reflective practice, and assessment. 4 cr.
  • SED SC 572: Science Methods II: Teaching in the Science Disciplines
    This course emphasizes the practical applications of instructional strategies and teaching skills presented in science methods I. It emphasizes the pedagogical content knowledge in the respective disciplines as they are being practiced in the student teaching practicum. 4 cr.
  • SED SC 575: Introduction to Science Education
    Provides an introduction to modern learning theory emphasizing inquiry learning in the classroom for science and engineering. The four-credit option includes a pre-practicum for pre-service teachers. Var cr.
  • SED SC 576: Science Teaching Pre-Practicum
    Pre-service teachers will participate in a pre-practicum experience in local schools and a biweekly seminar where they will have the opportunity to study and practice science teaching methods addressed in SC570: Science Teaching Methods. 2 cr.
  • SED SC 595: Laboratory Learning in Life Sciences
    Course integrated academic content in basic biology, with instruction in how to learn in laboratory settings, includes analysis preparation, adjusting to variations in experiments, devising suitable pedagogy, and on- suite instructional strategies. Emphasizes student's reflective inquiry. 2 cr.

    Full-time student-teaching in selected schools. Six weeks; Minimum 150 hours required.
  • SED SC 609: Student-Teaching Practicum: Science, 9-12
    Full-time student-teaching in selected high schools. Six weeks; Minimum 150 hours required.

  • SED SE 250: Disability, Education, and Public Policy
    Students will examine how disabilities impact students, their families, and their educational/community participation; analyze the historical treatment of individuals with disabilities; discuss contemporary ethical issues; learn federal legislation; and develop a foundational understanding of supportive educational practices.   • SED SE 251: Special Education and Adolescents
    Students will analyze the impact of disabilities on adolescents, their families, and educational/community participation; learn federal legislation; and, explore behavior management/instructional strategies to ensure that future secondary education teachers will work effectively with all individuals within a diverse student body.   • SED SE 315: Field Experience in Special Education: Severe Disabilities
    Designed to develop skills to observe students with severe disabilities, service delivery models, and instructional and behavior management strategies. Learn to analyze students' learning profiles. 50 hours of fieldwork plus seminar. Prereq: SE 250. 2 cr.
  • SED SE 316: Fieldwork in Special Education: Severe Disabilities
    Through a second pre-practicum fieldwork experience and accompanying seminar, students further develop skills to work with students with severe disabilities, collect data, and plan/instruction with support. 50 hours of fieldwork plus seminar. Prereq: SE 315. 2 cr.
  • SED SE 317: Fieldwork in Special Education: Autism
    Designed to support the prepracticum experience (50 hours) working with students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The seminar includes the presentation of content related to the prepracticum and discussion related to the student's fieldwork experiences. Prereq: SE 250 2cr.
  • SED SE 401: Special Education: Cognition and Learning
    Designed to develop an understanding of the various theories of learning that have informed the development of instructional and behavior managements strategies for students with disabilities. Prereq: SE 250 4cr.
  • SED SE 480: Teaching Students with Special Needs
    Students will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to design, implement, and evaluate individualized educational programs for students with moderate disabilities PreK-8. Prereq: LR 501. 4 cr.
  • SED SE 493: Practicum in Disabilities Studies
    Through fieldwork experience and accompanying seminar, students develop an understanding of human services agencies for individuals with disabilities, service delivery models, policies, roles and responsibilities, and collaboration. Var cr.

  • SED SE 502: Behavioral and Emotional Problems: Characteristics and Methods
    Introduces students to childhood emotional and behavioral disorders. Students will identify questions to ask if they believe a student may have an emotional/behavioral disorder, identify resources within the educational system and the broader mental health system, and discuss evidence-based interventions. 4 cr.
