French: Language, Literature, Linguistics, Culture (including courses in English)

• CAS LF 111: First-Semester French
  A multimedia approach for students who have never studied French. A variety of communicative tasks develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.
• CAS LF 112: Second-Semester French
  Continues CAS LF 111. A multimedia approach which develops speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills, together with the grammar and vocabulary needed for more complex communicative tasks.
• CAS LF 113: Intensive Beginning French
  Intensive French course for beginners or according to placement test results. Introduction to grammar, vocabulary, and structure of French, emphasizing the basic communication skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. (If CAS LF 111, 112, 123, 131, 132, or a more advanced college-level course has been completed, this course cannot be taken for credit.)
• CAS LF 211: Third-Semester French
  Advances proficiency in speaking, writing, reading, and listening in a communicative classroom setting. Grammar studied is used in context through thematic discussions on topics ranging from daily life to Francophone culture, in short readings, and through diverse written tasks.
• CAS LF 212: Fourth-Semester French
  Advances four skills proficiency in a communicative classroom setting. Grammar is used in context through thematic discussions, the reading of a short novel, and in diverse written tasks. Fulfills CAS language requirement, prepares for Level 1 Advanced Courses (CAS LF 307 -- LF 311).
• CAS LF 303: French Composition and Conversation I
  Topics-based courses exploring various aspects of French and Francophone literature, culture, and society. In the context of each section's unique theme, students advance proficiency in speaking, writing, reading, and listening. Students may repeat LF 303 for credit once, but only if the second topic is different. Topic for Spring 2017 Section A1: Cross Continental Connections. Topic for Spring 2017 Section B1: French for Business. Topic Spring 2017 C1: French through Media. Topic Spring 2017 D1: Secret Lies and Family Ties. Topic Spring 2017 E1: Mythes et histoire dans la diaspora africaine.
• CAS LF 304: Composition and Conversation II
  Develops increased fluency and a more nuanced use of spoken and written French through discussion of contemporary fiction and film. Reading of articles from the press to explore current and historical issues in French society.
• CAS LF 305: Advanced Written Expression
  Intensive study of the art of writing through translation exercises and development of individual style through readings, analysis of writing styles, free composition and class discussion.
• CAS LF 306: Advanced Oral Expression
  Advanced training in rapid and idiomatic French speech. Oral reports. Role playing; vocabulary building; targeted work on pronunciation, intonation, and aural comprehension. Lab required.
• CAS LF 307: French Arts and Society
  Advanced study of French language through the analysis of a topic or theme in the arts and society. Students advance in speaking, reading, writing, and listening through the analysis of literary, historical, and cultural texts. Specific themes vary by semester.
• CAS LF 308: French through Film and Media
  With the goal of better understanding French and Francophone culture and society, students study various media forms that can include film, written and broadcast press, television, podcasts, blogs, and social media.
• CAS LF 309: French in the World
  Advanced study of French through the analysis of images, short stories, excerpts of novels and films that address the relationship between France and its former colonies in West Africa.
• CAS LF 310: French for the Professions
  Advanced study of French as used in the professions in the francophone world. Readings, discussions, and assignments develop linguistic skills and cultural competence: current political and economic issues, familiarity with major French-language newspapers, creation of French CV and cover letter.
• CAS LF 311: French Popular Culture
  Advanced study of French through topics in popular culture. Topic for Fall 2016: Crime. Analysis of the formulas of crime fiction through novels, short stories, series, and movies. Contemporary debates on topics related to criminality, such as marginalization, poverty, violence, ethics, and justice.
• CAS LF 341: Contemporary Trends in French Culture and Society
  Through current articles and headlines, films and songs, this class explores the meaning and preservation of French "Culture" while investigating areas of social debate from a French perspective. Designed for but not limited to students returning from abroad.
• CAS LF 348: France Past to Postmodern: French Civilization Through Film
  Examines France's classic cultural symbols and evolution from monarchy into the revolutionary nation that introduced notions of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. Survey of events in today's post-modern and post-colonial state. Uses film, video, articles to explore contemporary culture and politics.
• CAS LF 350: Introduction to Analysis of French Texts
  Development of techniques for reading and interpreting French literary texts. Special attention to the study of lyric poetry, drama, and short narrative. Carries humanities divisional credit in CAS.
• CAS LF 351: Introduction to the French Novel
  Close readings in the French novel from its origins to the nouveau roman. Attention to narration, themes, symbols, and schools. Investigation of the roman d'analyse, Romantic prose, realist fiction, and other types of narrative. Carries humanities divisional credit in CAS.
