CAS NE 360: Introduction to Computational Neuroscience of Speech, Language, and Hearing
Introduces the foundations of auditory perception including the mammalian auditory pathway, speech and language perception, links with speech production, auditory scene analysis, and music perception from a computational perspective. Laboratory computer assignments elucidate functional properties of these systems. -

CAS NE 445: Cellular and Molecular Neurophysiology
Cellular and molecular basis of neural excitability and synaptic transmission. The molecular understanding of ion channels is extrapolated to higher brain functions such as learning, memory, and sleep. Three hours lecture, three hours lab. Also offered as CAS BI 445. -
CAS NE 455: Developmental Neurobiology
Fundamental principles of developmental neurobiology, stressing molecular mechanisms that underlie early neural development, differentiation, process outgrowth, and behavior. Three hours lecture, one hour discussion. Also offered as CAS BI 455. -
CAS NE 481: Molecular Biology of the Neuron
Topics include electrical properties of neurons, a survey of neurotransmitters, molecular structure and function of receptors, synaptic transmission, intracellular signaling, and the molecular biology of sensory transduction. Three hours lecture, one hour discussion. Also offered as CAS BI 481. -

In depth exploration of applied human neuroanatomy, through clinical cases. A study of lesion localization and their effects on functional systems through computer simulations and an in-clinic shadowing experience alongside clinical neurology faculty for direct observation of applied neuroanatomy. -

A broad survey of sensory system function in model organisms and humans, focusing on fundamental principles of neural processing. Topics include basic cellular transduction, neural coding, and links between neural activity and sensory perception. Also offered as CAS BI 520. -
CAS NE 521: Animal Models in Behavioral Neuroscience
Examines the modern behavioral approaches and wide range of species across the animal kingdom used to model human behavior and neural function. Lectures present background material, and students lead discussion of primary research articles. Also offered as CAS PS 521. -
CAS NE 525: Biology of Neurodegenerative Diseases
An in-depth look at molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and their impact and relevance in clinical diagnosis and treatment. Topics include the molecular pathways of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, and Creuztfeldt-Jacob Disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Also offered as CAS BI 525. -
CAS NE 526: Neural Control of Movement
In-depth examination of the neural mechanisms underlying body movement, with attention to current research techniques and applications to neuroprosthetics. Surveys literature that has shaped our understanding of brain regions including the primary and supplementary motor cortices, brain stem, basal ganglia, and cerebellum. -

Localization in the brain of human mental functions and the study of their neural mechanisms. Topics include methods (fMRI, PET, TMS, ERP), memory, perception, recognition, attention, and executive processes. Also offered as CAS PS 528. -
CAS NE 529: Neuroplasticity: Enabling the Brain to Heal Itself
Review of neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the astounding reorganizational capacity of the brain. Critical examination of ways to promote this plasticity: early childhood experiences, positive thinking, meditation, exercise, visualization, physical therapy, computerized re-training, and sensory and motor prostheses. CAS NE 530: Neural Models of Memory Function
Computational models of neurobiological mechanisms for memory function and spatial navigation, with a particular emphasis on cellular and circuit models of the hippocampus and related cortical structures. Also offered as CAS PS 530. -
CAS NE 535: Translational Research in Alzheimer?s Disease
An introduction to translational research focused on Alzheimer's disease, with particular emphasis on the search for new therapeutic targets, from observations of pathogenic phenotypes in patients to the development of appropriate animal and cellular models of the disease.
