• CFA MU 823: CFA MU 823: Seminar in Music of the Baroque Period
  Topics may include madrigals, monody, early opera, sacred and secular cantatas, individual composers' and national styles, instrumental music, reception, cultural context, notation, analysis, and performance of Baroque music. • CFA MU 824: Seminar: Music of the Classic Period
  Prereq: graduate standing in the University as a music major, corresponding 700-level courses in period music histories, or approval of instructor. Special problems in history and analysis of music. Individual research projects, special assignments, and class research projects as directed by instructor. 3 cr.
• CFA MU 825: CFA MU 825: Seminar in Music of the Romantic Period
  Topics may include program music, opera, symphony, chamber music, the Lied, sacred music, individual composers' and national styles, cultural context, reception, notation, analysis, and performance of Romantic music. Permission of instructor. 4 credits. May be repeated for credit. (Meets with CFA MU 725.)
• CFA MU 826: CFA MU 826: Seminar in Music of the Twentieth Century
  Topics may include modernism, the replacement of tonality, music of war, opera, symphony, chamber music, sacred music, individual composers' and national styles, cultural context, reception, notation, analysis, and performance of twentieth-century music. Permission of instructor. 4 credits. May be repeated for credit. (Meets with CFA MU 726.)
• CFA MU 827: CFA MU 827: Seminar: Special Topics on Musicology
  Close study of specifically defined areas in the forefront of musicological research. Individual research papers and class research projects as assigned by the instructor. Permission of instructor. 4 cr. May be repeated for credit. (Meets with CFA MU 727.)
• CFA MU 828: CFA MU 828: Pro-Seminar in Musicology and Ethnomusicology
  Required for graduate students in Musicology and Ethnomusicology. This course provides an overview of the historical development of the disciplines, explores research techniques, and introduces influential theoretical perspectives, including: empiricism, psychology, criticism, representation, gender, and globalization. Fall Semester. 4 credits.
• CFA MU 830: Contemplating Ethnomusicology
  This graduate seminar is required for graduate students in Ethnomusicology. This course will involve in-depth reading and discussion of key areas of scholarship: music and politics, music and gender, music and religion, music and identity, and other useful paradigms. This course will broaden and deepen the intellectual horizons of graduate students in ethnomusicology and other interested graduate students. Ethnomusicology graduate students will often take this graduate seminar in their third semester, but it could also be taken earlier.
• CFA MU 831: CFA MU 831: Medieval and Renaissance
  Introduction to paleography and codicology. Scripts and writing. The notation of plainchant. Polyphonic notation from the twelfth to the sixteenth century. Lute and keyboard tablatures. Continuous practice in transcribing examples into modern notation and performing from original notations. 4 credits.
• CFA MU 832: Medieval and Renaissance Notation I, II
  Principles of mensural notation used in polyphonic ensemble music from the thirteenth through the sixteenth centuries. Practice in transcribing examples into modern notation. Transcription of lute and keyboard tablatures, and history and principles of earlier notational systems.
• CFA MU 834: CFA MU 834: Aesthetics, Criticism, and Historiography
  Issues in aesthetics, criticism, and historiography particularly relevant to musicology, such as compositional process and reception, the musical work and recording technology, as well as sound, musical style, taste, and canon formation. 4 credits. May be repeated for credit.
• CFA MU 838: Pro Seminar in Musicology and Ethnomusicology
  In this seminar, students will be introduced to the history of the disciplines of musicology and ethnomusicology. We shall explore a wide range of approaches and theoretical paradigms for the study of music and culture. This course provides a fundamental understanding of the disciplines of musicology and ethnomusicology from their initial phases to the present. open to graduate students in all disciplines. 3 cr.
