The Graduate Program

Students in the Graduate Program in English enjoy the advantages of a large faculty but do not suffer the disadvantages of a large program. The result is a student-centered department with a wide selection of graduate courses and professors.

The Department of English offers degree programs leading to a Master of Arts (MA) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in English, as well as two Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree programs in Creative Writing and in Playwriting.

Terminal English MA students complete their degrees in one academic year. Doctoral students are normally awarded stipends for their first year and are funded for five additional years with teaching and dissertation fellowships, contingent upon satisfactory performance in the program.

Our outstanding faculty members work closely with students at every stage of the program. We assist students to become successful teachers and scholars and to prepare them for appropriate employment.
