JD Dual or Advanced Degrees

A dual or advanced degree can enrich your studies and enhance your professional qualifications. Our dual-degree programs dovetail with the offerings of other Boston University graduate schools and select foreign partners—enabling you to earn two advanced degrees in less time than it would take to pursue them separately. In addition, the BU Law Graduate Tax Program and Graduate Program in Banking & Financial Law allow qualified students to pursue a Master of Laws degree (LLM) at an accelerated pace, usually in just one additional semester.

Law & Health Care Management (JD/MBA)

If your interest is health care, the JD/MBA dual-degree program in Law & Health Care Management, offered in conjunction with the Boston University School of Management, can enable you to earn both the JD and the MBA degrees in an accelerated program of four years rather than the usual five.

Law & Historic Preservation Studies (JD/MA)

This interdisciplinary program involves both BU Law and the American & New England Studies Program of the BU Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. You can complete both programs in seven semesters.

Law & International Relations (JD/MA)

The dual-degree program in Law & International Relations provides an essential background for positions in national governments or international agencies, and gives the international lawyer a perspective on the global environment. Students can complete this dual-degree program in 3.5 years.

Law & Management (JD/MBA)

The worlds of law and business have become increasingly intertwined. BU Law and Boston University Graduate School of Management offer a combined JD/MBA that provides the legal and analytical tools for results-oriented decision-making. Students can complete both degrees in as little as four years.

Law & Mass Communication (JD/MS)

The growth of new communications technologies has created a need for lawyers with awareness of the technological, marketing and legal changes brought about by a wide spectrum of new media. You can complete this program offered in partnership with the BU College of Communication in only 3.5 years.

Law & Philosophy (JD/MA)

This program is offered by BU Law and the BU Graduate School of Arts & Sciences’ Department of Philosophy. You will take at least four seminars in the Philosophy Department. Credit from these courses applies to both the JD and MA degrees. You can receive both degrees in as little as four years.

Law & Public Health (JD/MPH)

BU Law and the Boston University School of Public Health offer a dual-degree program that reflects the interrelationship between the legal system and the delivery of health care services. Successful candidates receive the JD degree followed by the MPH—a 3.5 to four-year sequence that otherwise would take at least 1.5 more years.

Accelerated LLM in Banking & Financial Law

By taking qualifying courses during the second and third years of the JD program, you can graduate from the JD program with sufficient advanced standing to complete the LLM in Banking & Financial Law in just one additional semester.

Accelerated LLM in Taxation

You can pursue an advanced degree in taxation on a seven-semester basis through the school’s Graduate Tax Program. Employers in the tax field are increasingly citing the LLM degree as a prerequisite. The broad range of tax classes offered in the Graduate Tax Program provides outstanding preparation for real-world practice.

JD/LLM in Asian Legal Studies at the National University of Singapore

For complete immersion in the legal systems of South, East and Southeast Asia, you can spend your third year in Singapore pursuing an LLM in Asian Legal Studies at Asia’s “global law school,” the National University of Singapore (NUS). At the end of the year, you’ll receive the BU Law JD and the LLM degree from NUS. In English.
