  • CFA MU 580: Practicum Seminar
    Required for undergraduate and graduate Music Education students registered for Practicum. First semester seminar topics will include development of an educational philosophy, resume preparation, job interviewing, and classroom behavior management. Second semester seminar topics include a refresher on job interviewing, assessment, public and parental relations, and music program advocacy. Case study sessions will help seniors analyze complicated classroom situations. Students will be guided through the teacher licensure process and readied for entry into the music education job market. 0 cr. 2 semesters.

  • CFA MU 589: Music Technology Pedagogy
    This course serves to expand the knowledge that many teachers have pertaining to the procedural uses of technology for teaching music. Students explore music technology pedagogy; that, the practice of teaching music in a technologically enhanced environment and the special kinds of teaching skills required to do so effectively. Students examine theoretical foundations of the uses of technology for music teaching, including theories of student interaction with technology, multimedia principles, and technology-infused music curricula. Students will also explore state and local education standards that music technology uses that may be explored include: uses of the Web, interactive white boards, lab management, technology based composition and creativity, and technology-enhanced ensemble rehearsals. Students will design a technology based curricular unit of music study and implement that unit in a real-world scenario such as their own classroom or studio. Expectations for the course may include development of an electronic documentation of the curriculum development, suitable for delivery over the Web. 4 cr.

    Music and Poetry. An historical survey of the relations between the two arts from the Greeks to the present. Discussions of poetry in many languages; emphasis on English. Chant, song, madrigal, opera, and other forms. Ability to read music is required. Also offered as CAS EN 494 and GRS EN 694.

  • CFA MU 601: Analytical Techniques 1
    Systematic and empirical investigations into formal and compositional procedures of selected masterworks from the tonal repertoire. Lectures leading to individual analytical projects. Credits not applicable to MusAD in Composition. 3 cr.
  • CFA MU 602: Analytical Techniques 2
    Analysis of contemporary music. Investigation into compositional methods and procedures used in twentieth-century music. Lectures leading to individual analytical projects. Credits not applicable to MusAD in Composition. 3 cr.
  • CFA MU 605: Fugue
    Analysis and writing of examples of fugues in three and four voices based on the practice of J. S. Bach and his contemporaries. 2 cr.
  • CFA MU 606: Modal Counterpoint
    Analysis and writing of sixteenth-century vocal styles based on the practices of Palestrina, Lassus, and others. 2 cr.
