Students enroll in an elective course and an internship course. Each course carries four Boston University units. Students must enroll for a total of eight units.

Note: Students will receive up-to-date syllabi when their courses begin.

Core Phase Elective

Students choose from one of the following courses.

Internship Phase

Students participate in Sydney’s local work life in a range of Australian and multinational businesses and organizations. Students will be at their internships four days a week and will undertake coursework to support the academic objectives of the internship program.

Health/Human Services

Gain experience in physical therapy, occupational therapy, health and human services administration, or mental health/psychology related organizations. We can no longer offer placements in medical settings, human physiology, research or clinical psychology. Past internships have included Lucas Gardens School, Me & My Wellness, Five Dock Physio, and Sports, Spinal & Rehab Solutions. Placements vary by term and are subject to availability, no specific organization can be guaranteed. We encourage you to chat with your Program Manager if you have very specific interests within the Health track.

The above are examples of past internship placements only. While BU Study Abroad guarantees an internship to program participants, specific placements may not always be available. Likewise, internships may be available in academic areas not listed.

Internship Course

Study Abroad will enroll students in a zero unit Hub co-curricular and a four-unit internship course, which includes a classroom component. Placements are contingent upon the students’ experience, professional interests, and relevant academic history, as well as the availability of opportunities in any given term; flexibility is essential. Upon successful completion of the internship experience, students will receive a Hub requirement in the area Individual in Community from the co-curricular HUB SA 330.

Internship Components

  • The internship itself (evaluated by the workplace supervisor)
  • Academic strand of the internship, including multiple written assignments and participation in internship classes
  • Internship advisor’s evaluation
