Description

Terahertz and Infrared Metamaterials for Imaging and Energy Harvesting Applications -- ABSTRACT: Metamaterials are designer electromagnetic materials that consist of subwavelength, periodic metallic inclusions. Experimental realizations of negative index of refraction, invisibility cloaks, and perfect lenses demonstrate the ability of metamaterials to achieve exotic electromagnetic responses. Metamaterials is now a mature research field and focus has shifted toward demonstration of viable applications. Recently near unity absorption has been achieved with metamaterials and results show that the fundamental light interactions of surfaces may be dynamically controlled. We show metamaterial based spatial light modulators operating at terahertz and infrared frequencies which permit coded aperture single pixel imaging, and tailoring of emission, thus enabling energy harvesting applications.
