The Arts and Sciences Core Curriculum and Classics Department are pleased to co-present a virtual speaker series this fall entitled Black Classism--Moving Forward.
The two talks expand the classical tradition to explore the role that the Classics played in the struggle for black liberty and equality in cultural traditions of Black America, and in the development of Black Classical philology and the origins of language and classical ideas. This is the second of the talks.
Emily Greenwood, Professor of Classics, Yale University
Title: "Black Classical Philology: Writing back to a deadly metaphor in Aristotle's Politics." Based on material from her current book project, Black Classicisms and the Expansion of the Classical Tradition.
Greenwood is the author of Afro-Greeks: Dialogues Between Anglophone Caribbean Literature and Classics in the Twentieth Century
Students should read Book 1 of Aristotle's Politics in translation, in preparation for the talk.
